Learning From the Greats — Haile Gebrselassie

Haile

The EMPEROR of long distance running is Haile Gebrselassie. If you have never read his book, THE GREATEST, then you are severely missing out on some amazing stories on arguably the greatest runner of all-time. I’m not going to go through all of his accomplishments here…but if you have never heard of Haile G, then google him…his resume if VERY IMPRESSIVE.

One of the things that I learned from the Emperor is to simplify the sport. Running is so simple. All you need is a pair of shoes and an opportunity.

There is a story of this one time when Haile was asked, “Do you do hill repetitions in training?” And he answered, “Yes, yes, I do. In fact, we run many times up a hill that is 87 meters in length.”

87 meters…uphill…THAT MUST BE THE SECRET…

The reporter continued on…”Why do you choose to run only 87 meters uphill? What is your reasoning behind this?”

Haile G, with a smile, answered, “Because at 88 meters the hill becomes a downhill.”

Keep it simple. 🙂
