Learning From the Greats — Ingrid Kristiansen

When I am training and competing, I really concentrate, but during the rest of the day, I don’t want to think about running. I think too many runners today are too serious about their running.

— Ingrid Kristiansen

I’m about to start reading about Ingrid Kristiansen, but saw this quote from her and thought…YES…exactly. It is very dangerous if running is your identity…a bad run leads to a bad day…a bad stretch of running leads to a bad patch in life, and God forbid, an injury? Well, you see where I am going with that.

Right now I have a young man on my team that is having the season of a lifetime and the other day I was talking with my assistant coaches and they said, “I don’t think he even thinks about his running until it’s time to run…” Maybe that’s why he is enjoying one of the best cross country seasons he’s ever had.
