Trent Phelps, April 2017
Trent is the all-time best DBU runner over 1500-3000 meters (including the steeplechase). He owns every school record in those events — 1500 meters, Mile, 3000 meters, and 3000 meter steeplechase. The workout above came three days before he set the school record in the 1500 meters (3:50.03) at the SFA Carl Kight Invitational.
For the true 1500-3000 meter runner I love doing strength sessions of 800-1200 meter repeats…I personally believe this is where they are cut and molded into the runners their potential shows. The toughness required to run 6000 meters of work at 5k pace or faster, with just a scant 200 meter jog recovery is TOUGH; but so is racing the ‘middle’ distances.
Trent went on this season to run 9:06 in the 3000 meter steeplechase.
Exactly a year later he would run 8:57.
Now that we are entering his senior year of running we’re thinking even bigger…All-American in XC, Sub-4 in the mile, 8:40’s for the steeple…and maybe, just maybe being in the hunt for a National Championship.
