Big weekend for Marathon work!!!

The JHPRunning Crew and the 2020 US Olympic Marathon Trials Project had a huge weekend of workouts. We’re getting heavy into the marathon training with Matt Galvin racing in just two weeks (Dallas Marathon) and Jake Krolick and Kelsey Bruce both racing in early-to-mid January!!!

This weekend we had three totally different marathon workouts, but three great results. Here’s what went down on Saturday / Sunday this weekend.

Saturday:

Kelsey Bruce — 22 miles, naturally progressive. Kelsey ended up running this session over a pretty hilly course near her hometown (close to Mexico) and was able to progress down throughout, despite some rolling hills that caused some miles to be harder than others! The instructions on this one was that there was no pace expectation…whether she ran 7:00/miles or 6:00/miles the goal was to feel good and to naturally progress. She was told that she could pick it up over the finish if feeling good.

Here are her splits:
7:55, 7:05, 6:53, 6:52, 6:50, 6:44, 6:37, 6:39, 6:39, 6:30, 6:28, 6:26, 6:19, 6:22, 6:29, 6:14, 5:57, 6:05, 5:59, 6:10, 6:08, 5:50…her average over the last 11 miles was 6:10/mile. GREAT RUN!!!

Sunday:

Jake Krolick — 22 miles w/ miles 18-20 at marathon effort. Jake ran this in Canyon, Texas where the wind always blows…and he said he had a pretty good tailwind that helped him run 5:09, 5:07, 5:04 miles on the ‘tempo’ segment which is MOVING!!! All in all Jake ended up averaging 5:42/mile pace for the last 13 miles of this 22 miler (including a 2-mile cool down)…HE WAS ROLLING. This is Jake’s longest training run ever and is the start of our marathon specific phase!!! GREAT WORK TODAY!!!

Matt Gavlin — 22 miles w/ miles 11-20 at marathon effort. Matt said that his legs were dead to start this session but was pleased that he was able to run those miles 11-20 at 5:30/mile average!!! We’re now just two weeks out from the Dallas Marathon for Matt and this was his last big session and with the wind that we had in Dallas this morning I am guessing this was more like 5:20/mile effort!!! Matt has had a great segment and is ready!!! ANOTHER GREAT DAY FOR THE MARATHON CREW!!!
