Lasse Viren, September, 1972
At the end of the 1971 track season, Viren and Haikkola (his coach) sat down and set up a one-year plan of attack for the Olympic games, something they would do two other times during the next decade. Viren had decent finishing speed, but they knew he would have to get faster over the last lap if he wanted to win the major championships. One of Viren’s workouts, designed o develop the ability to withstand higher levels of lactic acid and to hone his kick, was running 5000 meters along the grass infield of a track, alternating sprinting 100 meters and floating 100 meters.
